The Cheapest Big Change in a Sandy Springs Kitchen: The Backsplash
Before committing to a full Sandy Springs kitchen remodel, find out whether the backsplash and the lighting were the actual problem. Often they were.

A lot of kitchen remodels start with a feeling that the kitchen looks dated, and that feeling quickly turns into a plan to replace everything in it.
Before you go there, figure out what is actually making it look dated. In Sandy Springs, both in the in-town homes near City Springs and in the larger houses closer to the river, the answer is often two things other than the cabinets: the backsplash and the lighting.
Why the backsplash carries so much
It sits at eye level, directly behind the surfaces you use, in the only part of the kitchen with a hard vertical edge. It is also the element most tied to a specific decade: four-inch granite returns, small tumbled stone, glass mosaic in a particular palette.
Changing it is a contained project. The cabinets, counters, and plumbing all stay; only the surface that draws the eye changes.
Two practical notes:
- Grout choice does half the work. A tight joint in a color close to the tile reads modern; a wide contrasting joint reads busy, whatever the tile.
- Pick for cleaning, not just looks. Behind a range, a smooth surface with minimal grout lines is the difference between wiping and scrubbing.
In a Sandy Springs kitchen, lighting is the other half
Most kitchens in these houses were lit with one central fixture and nothing else. That produces shadows exactly where you work, because you stand between the light and the counter.
Under-cabinet lighting fixes that and changes how the whole room looks at night. It costs a fraction of any surface replacement, and it is the change people notice first.
If you only do two things, make them the backsplash and under-cabinet lighting.
When it really is a full remodel
Sometimes the kitchen really does need the bigger project. These are the signs:
- The layout does not work: the fridge blocks a walkway, there is no landing space beside the range, two people cannot be in there at the same time.
- The boxes are failing: water damage under the sink, doors that will not sit flush because the carcass is out of square.
- You are moving plumbing or the range anyway for another reason.
If any of those apply, doing it piece by piece just delays the real work.
Sequencing if you are doing both eventually
If a full remodel is coming in two years but not now, do the lighting now and wait on the backsplash. The backsplash choice depends on the counters, and the counters are part of the later project. Putting in a backsplash now and redoing it with the new counters is the one order that really wastes money.
Most kitchen remodels run three to six weeks depending on scope, custom orders, and any layout or plumbing changes. A backsplash and lighting refresh is a fraction of that, and it buys you time to decide.
Start by standing in it
Cook one meal and pay attention to where you reach, where you cannot see, and what you have to move to use the counter. That tells you whether you have a surface problem or a layout problem, and the answer changes the budget by an order of magnitude.
